This risky behavior is gaining popularity through posts and videos on social media sites such as You Tube and Facebook. The consequences of this activity can be serious. The "Challenge" involves trying to swallow a heaping spoonful of cinnamon within 60 seconds without drinking any water. Saliva is rapidly absorbed by the cinnamon, resulting in coughing, gagging, and choking. Inhalation of the cinnamon can result in burning chest pain and breathing difficulty. This is especially dangerous for children with asthma or other respiratory issues. While this behavior has not been a problem at Resurrection, I urge you to have a conversation with your child about the hazards of participating in this activity. It is important that we become educated about this type of behavior that is so easily accessible for viewing by children through the social media. This is an opportunity to discuss the dangers of believing what is viewed on the internet and giving in to peer pressure.
